Q&A
Like most people, COVID lockdowns inspired me to get out on my bike. But I can’t just put it all down to COVID boredom. Bikes have always been around in my family, but there was never any pressure for me to actually ride one, which I think is important. Finding cycling organically and in my own time has helped motivate me and make sure that cycling is something that I want to be doing for myself and not to benefit anyone else.
My first race was an all women’s race locally for me at Hanging Rock with the Hawthorn Cycling Club. It was perfect for me as an introduction into racing and I loved it. Everyone was so supportive and friendly! I was the limit group and finished 7th overall.
I don’t think I ever really realised I was good at riding a bike- just that I absolutely loved it. I’m one of those weird people who like training a lot more than racing, so for me I think I realised I might not be too shabby when I went to my first race against other girls and actually did alright. I remember thinking “Wow. This cycling thing is actually fun”
I’ve learnt pretty quickly this year that juggling school, work and cycling is not for the faint hearted. I’m currently in my second year of a double degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition and working part-time. Trying to get quality training in before these commitments has been something to get used to, but after a couple of months in, I’m confident I have a system down pat
