The men's race began in a familiar aggressive fashion, with riders climbing over themselves to go on the charge and try and pull out an advantage over the CCACHE X BODYWRAP led peloton.

Nobody was able to extend an advantage over 10 seconds as riders who missed out on each move tried to cross over and dragged the peloton back along with them.

Riding here as an individual, Sydney's own Will Heffernan posed the greatest threat in the final moments, opening a lead that held steady around 10 seconds for the final few laps, much to the delight of the home crowd.

It wasn't to be as he was swept back into the peloton in the closing laps and the sprinters tried to assemble their teams ahead of the bunch finish. Across the line for the bell lap, each squad was still busy organising themselves before Brennan emerged and took up the charge for National Road Race Champion Pat Eddy. They led around the final bend and looked to have the edge, before CCACHE X BODYWRAP's Oscar Gallager stepped out and around the Brennan train to deliver Kurt Eather a smooth passage where he blasted home to deliver a big win in his home round.

Due to the bonus seconds earned from the intermediate sprints, and second place on the stage, Eather's teammate Oscar Gallagher takes the race leader's yellow jersey into stage 2.

Stage two tomorrow takes the riders to the now infamous Pheasant Wood motorsport circuit, a deceptively challenging course that last year flipped the race on its head.
