‘I love the redirection of the Australian racing series’

‘By compacting the racing into three months of action-packed calendar it’s going to be easier for fans to follow and keep up to date with. As for the riders, it allows them to hone their form to a specific period of the year, which will lend to some exciting racing! To have a week-to-week series of the best racing around Australia when I was coming through as a young rider would have been the dream!’

We recently had a conversation with Mitch about his cycling career, transition to international competition, and the challenges he encountered along the way. Read on to learn more about Mitch’s experiences.

“During my racing days in Australia, I rode for the Drapac Porsche Development team. Transitioning to international racing, particularly in Europe, was incredibly challenging. The level of competition was exceptionally high, and the cultural differences, along with the unfamiliar racing styles, almost broke me in my first few years overseas”

“One of the biggest challenges was adapting to a culture where cycling is deeply ingrained in everyday life, unlike in Australia where we love the sport but don’t quite live and breathe it the same way. This immersion in European cycling culture, both in and out of the peloton, was something you couldn’t fast-forward through.”

“If I could give advice to my younger self aiming for an international contract, it would be to race as much as possible. Gaining racing experience is crucial; you might be as strong as the best, but without that racing know-how, you’d just be hanging on for dear life.”

“Today, my life is still very much centred around cycling. I am involved in cycling media through my brand, Life in the Peloton, and work with various other cycling brands. It’s a lot of fun to be connected to the sport in this way. At the end of the day, I am a true cycling fan and love watching the races.”

We’re pumped to have Mitch join the team as ProVelo Super League Ambassador, as a cyclist and host of the popular podcast ‘Life in the Peloton’, his knowledge on and off the field will be extremely valuable.
