Sammons Steps Up

Only recently transitioning from running to cycling, Sophia Sammons (Team Redcat) is laying the foundations for a big season.

Based out of Perth, WA, Sammons started the year on a high after winning the U23 national time trial title in front of a home crowd. To really stamp her authority on the race and show her prospects to the world, her performance would have placed her 3rd in the elite category. Not bad for a rider who only a few months prior was still a teenager.

Known for her time trialling ability, Sammons has clearly been working on the skills she needs to succeed in the large ProVelo Super League and European pelotons. Comparing her riding style this year to her PSL debut 12 months ago is a night and day difference.

She brought these skills and top level strength together nicely at the opening round in Adelaide, placing 4th overall in a tour that didn’t quite suit her natural characteristics. This tells me we can expect some big things as we head into the Tour of Tasmania for round 2. With some climbing opportunities on offer, Sammons will surely be looking to make her mark.

It’s been a rapid progression for the West Australian, and hopefully she can continue this momentum throughout the season and over to Europe. With a good mindset and team around her, all the right ingredients are there.

You can catch all the action of the 2026 ProVelo Super League season in-person, or enjoy expanded broadcast coverage live and on demand on SBS in Australia, Sky New Zealand in NZ with all broadcast stages live stream to the rest of the world on www.provelosuperleague.com and Facebook.
