Lynch and David showcase their courage in warm conditions to claim victory in Stage 3 of SA Kick It!

SBS Women’s League Stage 3

The women’s road race was tightly controlled, with both the Praties Racing Team and Butterfields Ziptrak squad positioning their leaders, Sophie Marr and Odette Lynch respectively, for a potential sprint finish. Mid-race, Anna Dubier of ARA Skip Capital was active, chasing sprint points and adding some spark to the race. However, as the final laps approached, it became clear that there would be a sprint showdown between Marr and Lynch.

Marr hit the front early in the final sprint, but Lynch, having learned from yesterday’s criterium, was perfectly positioned by her team. Lynch kicked ahead and Marr couldn’t respond, settling for second, while Sze Wing Le from team Hong Kong, China rounded out the podium. Lynch was quick to praise her team for their performance, noting "We haven’t done that yet as a team," while reflecting on the success of their first leadout of the season.

Talia Appleton maintained her lead at the top of the GC ahead of Katelyn Nicholson from Butterfields Ziptrak, while Praties teammate Sophia Sammons took 3rd overall. Bonus seconds collected by Marr moved her into 5th overall and secured four Praties riders in the top five overall, a dominant show of force season’s first round.

In a race marked by high attrition, the wind wreaked havoc on the peloton as Team Brennan took control early, using the crosswinds to split the race. The field fractured into six groups, with Brendon Davids from Brennan, initially dropped from the front split, fought his way back to the lead group before attacking with Tynan Shannon of Team Royal Bikes. The pair quickly built a significant lead, putting Davids into the virtual GC lead.

The duo worked well together, extending their advantage to 3 minutes over the chase group led by CCACHE BODYWRAP. Brennan's relentless pressure thinned the chase further, leaving just six riders - three from Brennan and two from Royal Bikes - pursuing the leaders.

Originally riding for Jack Ward, Davids sat on Shannon during the final lap, comfortable in the knowledge that if the duo were caught, his team would secure the GC with Ward and likely the stage win with Agnoletto. Shannon continued to tow Davids, knowing what was at stake and stating post race “I didn’t want to sit up and lose both”.

As they approached the finish, Davids and Shannon went head-to-head in a tight sprint for the win. It was close, but Davids proved too strong after a grueling day, claiming both the stage win and the overall classification. Jack Ward, conceding the overall victory to his teammate, secured 3rd place, the U23 classification, and the crucial series points in pursuit of the Jayco Alula stagiaire contract on offer.
